Welcome From the Principal

Dear Escalante-Biggs Academy Community,

It is my honor and a pleasure to welcome you to the 2023-2024 school year! I hope you all have had a relaxing and fun summer break. I am extremely proud to serve as the Principal of this spectacular learning community for the 2nd year, and I am elated to welcome our new Assistant Principal, Brittany Smith! Mrs. Smith has been a part of our community for over 10 years and I am confident that she will accomplish great things in her new role.

I would also like to welcome all of our new families: we are excited to share with you all that Escalante-Biggs Academy (EBA) has to offer and believe you will soon feel as we do, that EBA is a special place for all children! Last year we accomplished some amazing things, we celebrated our community’s diverse cultures through monthly assemblies, hosted really fun events for students and families, and welcomed many volunteers to support the cafeteria and special events. We look forward to continuing to partner with you all this year!

We are looking for 3 family representatives and 1 community member to join our Collaborative School Committee (CSC). This is a great opportunity to get involved and have a voice in decision making for the school. Last year, CSC partnered with our outdoor learning committee to collect donations for our community garden and worked together to receive a grant to fund an outdoor shed (shed is coming soon!). We could not have done this without the support of our wonderful representatives and of course the support of all of our community who donated materials. If you are interested in joining CSC or would like more information, please email me at marta_rodenas@dpsk12.net or call 720-424-4620. We will be holding elections in September via a link in ClassDojo, all families will have a chance to vote on the representatives. CSC meetings are held in person, at the school on the first Wednesday of the month from 3:15-4:00 pm, minutes for the meetings are available on the school website (eba.dpsk12.org).

Please continue to follow all traffic laws and directions from our staff outdoors, it is for the safety of our students and community. Please also remember our drop off and pick up times:

• Drop off is at classroom doors – 8:20-8:40am (12:10-12:20 pm for PM half day)
  • Late arrivals through front office – 8:40-9:15am (no entry after 9:15 am unless you have proof of an appointment, no entry for any student after 10:00 am)
• Pick up at classroom doors – 3:00-3:15 pm (11:10-11:20am for AM half day)
  • Late pick up after 3:15pm through the front office 

Please note that ALL visitors must show a photo ID, get a pass and check in/out through the front office (even for dropping off students late or picking up early). Only adults over the age of 18 can pick up/drop off students and they must be on the pick up list provided. If you are picking up your child early for an appointment, please do so after 1:00pm and come through the front office.

I want to give a big THANK YOU to our staff for all of their efforts to start this year in a smooth, efficient way. Teachers and paraprofessionals have worked hard getting their rooms organized and ready for our students. Office and custodial staff have also worked extra hard in getting the school clean and ready for the best school year yet!

We will be holding our traditional, in-person Back-to-School Night presentations on Thursday September 21st, more details to come soon! ¡Es un honor y un placer darles la bienvenida al año escolar 2023-2024! Espero que todos hayan tenido unas relajantes y divertidas vacaciones de verano. Estoy muy orgullosa de servir como directora de esta espectacular comunidad de aprendizaje por segundo año y estoy encantada de darle la bienvenida a nuestra nueva subdirectora, Brittany Smith. Mrs. Smith ha sido parte de nuestra comunidad durante más de 10 años y estoy segura de que logrará grandes cosas en su nuevo rol.

También me gustaría darles la bienvenida a todas nuestras nuevas familias: estamos emocionados de compartir con ustedes todo lo que Escalante-Biggs Academy (EBA) tiene para ofrecer y creemos que pronto sentirán, como nosotros, ¡que EBA es un lugar especial para todos los niños! El año pasado logramos algunas cosas increíbles, celebramos las diversas culturas de nuestra comunidad a través de asambleas mensuales, organizamos eventos realmente divertidos para estudiantes y familias, y dimos la bienvenida a muchos voluntarios para apoyar la cafetería y los eventos especiales. ¡Esperamos seguir colaborando con usted durante todo este año!

Estamos buscando 3 representantes familiares y 1 miembro de la comunidad para unirse a nuestro Comité Escolar Colaborativo (CSC). Esta es una gran oportunidad para involucrarse y tener voz en la toma de decisiones de la escuela. El año pasado, CSC se asoció con nuestro comité de aprendizaje al aire libre para recolectar donaciones para nuestro jardín comunitario y trabajaron juntos para recibir una subvención para financiar un cobertizo al aire libre (¡el cobertizo estará disponible pronto!). No podríamos haber hecho esto sin el apoyo de nuestros maravillosos representantes y, por supuesto, el apoyo de toda nuestra comunidad que donó materiales. Haremos elecciones en septiembre a través de un enlace en ClassDojo, todas las familias tendrán la oportunidad de votar por los representantes. Tenga en cuenta que TODOS los visitantes deben mostrar una identificación con fotografía, obtener un pase y registrarse/salir a través de la oficina principal (incluso para dejar a los estudiantes tarde o recogerlos temprano). Solo los adultos mayores de 18 años pueden recoger/dejar a los estudiantes y deben estar en la lista de recogida proporcionada. Si va a recoger a su hijo temprano para una cita, hágalo después de la 1:00pm y pase por la oficina principal.

Quiero agradecer enormemente a nuestro personal por todos sus esfuerzos para comenzar este año de una manera fluida y eficiente. Los maestros y paraprofesionales han trabajado arduamente para organizar y preparar sus aulas para nuestros estudiantes. ¡El personal de oficina y conserjería también ha trabajado muy duro para que la escuela esté limpia y lista para el mejor año escolar hasta el momento!

It is with great excitement to write this letter and introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal at Escalante Biggs Academy (EBA) as Mrs. Lazette Ray has now officially retired. This will mark my 11th year at EBA and I could not be more excited to work closely with you all. 

To give you a little background of myself, I graduated from University of Northern Colorado in 2012 with my teaching degree and an emphasis in multicultural studies. I recently completed my masters in educational leadership from the University of Texas Permian Basin. I’ve served in many different roles within this school including paraprofessional, teacher, instructional coach and even a parent the last 3 years while my twins attended ECE-3, ECE-4 and Kindergarten. While being an instructional coach and intervention teacher, I’ve really found my passion for supporting our teachers to ensure all of the students at our school are receiving top notch instruction and love they deserve. 

EBA is such a special school! I am committed to this community and wholeheartedly believe that every child is capable of learning at high levels in an environment that is safe and nurturing everyday. I hope to build strong relationships with you all and create ways to get you back in our school to support our children and teachers.  I’m looking forward to working in partnership with our dedicated staff, supportive parents and community to support our belief in “every child succeeds”.
